I do my little turn on the Catwalk đźŽ¶

I have been working with Blender to learn how to model low-poly characters. I took my first crack at it this weekend and made this mock-up:

I took a “healthy male” as the template to model a low-poly character with realistic proportions as an example of one vision for the game. (I am still going back and forth about whether to use human proportions – which would be better for modeling real gear eventually – or anthropomorphic cute animals and characters; future Mini-Poll topic…)

The boss (my wife) said this was ridiculous, and that no real scuba diver looked like the muscle bound, “Johnny Bravo figure” I set on the beach with a parasol and beach ball.

So – over the last day – I created this:

As I mentioned on Facebook, I modeled “an overweight, bald, middle-aged man for…reasons.”

And by “I modeled,” I mean as both the subject and the artist. Yes, there are pictures of me in A-pose. No, so don’t ask.

After I built the body, I crafted some separate board shorts and a rash guard. I will add one or two more basic accessories before doing the UVs… and then I am going to rig, skin, and animate.

Say “hello” to the prototype player character – very likely to be the playable character for the demo. He isn’t perfect, but he is gonna love diving and exploring – I just know it.
